ON A CLEAR SUMMER’S DAY

  • Oct. 30th, 2003 at 7:55 PM

He pulls up, top down, wearing a straw hat and matching grin.
As if he walked right out of a Tennessee Williams Play

I drive away, it’s late. I am cold and tired.
Feeling as if I am going the wrong way on this road.

He hands me sweaters and jackets, as if to protect me and watch over me. Nurturing and warm.

I step onto the porch and enter the coldness of his eyes.
Exposing me to the elements of humanity.

Another restless night, I wake up. Was it a dream or just a fantasy? Torn between compassion and anger, my mind drifts once again.
Unruly sleep falls upon me as I look for comfort within my soul.

The memory of an amazing friendship begins to warm my heart as I grab my pillow and settle in.

His eyes flash in front of me, I curl up in a corner of my room. Trying to escape the malice that I saw in them.

He puts me to bed after a long exhausting day and cries in my arms.
Seeking solace for his broken heart.

As I sign off on his obligation and helplessly stand by as he withdraws our friendship.

Wearing a straw hat and matching grin.
As if he walked right out of a Tennessee Williams play,
he walked right out of my life.

On a clear summer’s day.
